VIOLENCE PREVENTION

"Father up above, why in all this anger have you filled me up with love?" – Dave Matthews

In the results of ACTION 2000, WPYC observed an increase in the concern and awareness of teen violence in the community. Due to this increase, WPYC felt it was important to create the Violence Committee to obtain a true picture of why the concern of violence has risen from the fourth concern (ACTION ’98) to the second concern (ACTION ’00). The Violence Committee focuses on obtaining input from youth about violence such as what causes it and what teens think can be done to prevent it. To do this, focus groups are being conducted in all Wichita Public Schools as well as other Sedgwick County schools. These results will then be compiled into a Violence Results Packet that will be distributed to neighborhood associations, schools, agencies, and other interested groups or individuals. From this report, WPYC hopes others will identify solutions based on youth input to address the violence problem in our community.
